Sapphire on the Esplanade
The design for Sapphire on the Esplanade originated from its natural setting perched on a hill overlooking Hervey Bay. The units were set out in a V-pattern across the site so that all units achieved a northerly aspect and views across the bay. The building is constructed from a mix of solid concrete walls providing excellent insulation, and layers of metal battening providing privacy and sun screening as well as lightening the overall appearance of the building. Glass balustrades to the north provides uninterrupted views across the Bay. Natural stone and timber provide a warm main entry on the Watson St side.
The aesthetic of the building is modern, with a play of straight lines together with subtle curves to the balconies, open stair wells and a series of full-height voids through the entire building. This openness recognises Hervey Bay's subtropical climate and carefree lifestyle. The size of the building is softened with metal battening that filters the sun and large overhanging skillion roofs that provide shade to the whole building, helping to give it an excellent green star rating.
